Hall encoder test and Hall sensor

Hall encoder test and Hall sensor

Hall encoder test is carried out for Brushless motors. These types of motors are increasingly used in all industrial sectors due to their versatility and no-maintenance properties. This unquestionable advantage for the end user requires the manufacturer to provide reliable and defect-free products.

To assist the Manufacturer in this challenging undertaking, Risatti offers a test bench where, in addition to the electrical tests applicable according to current standards, such as ground efficiency, resistance, insulation and dielectric strength, other specific tests (for example Hall encoder test) for BLDC brushless motors have been implemented. These tests identify both construction glitches, like cabling errors of the connectors, and performance problems, such as motor oscillation at full speed.

Hall encoder test and Hall sensor

Hall sensors detect the presence of a magnetic field. Depending upon the presence or absence of a magnetic field, they can be programmed or configured to perform various functions and operations.

Their output voltage is directly proportional to the strength of the magnetic field.

Generally, there are two types of hall sensors – Hall Sensor Switch or Digital type and Hall Sensor transmitter or Analog type.

Digital type or Switch outputs only minimum and maximum voltage depending upon the presence of the magnetic field. When the hall sensor detects the minimum threshold of the magnetic field, it produces maximum voltage. Otherwise, there is no output.

The Analog type or transmitter outputs voltage depending upon the magnetic field’s strength. When the sensor is close to the magnetic field, it outputs maximum voltage. The output voltage decreases as the strength of the magnetic field decreases.

From the combination of the phase-to-phase voltage measurement and the relative Hall sensor, it is possible to adjust the correct phasing of the encoder with respect to the mechanical axis. The tests check if the UV voltage signals generated are in synch with the signals generated by the Hall encoder.

Once the previous tests have been completed, it is possible to feed and rotate the motor through a commercial drive, with self-tuning feature and measurement of voltage, current and power.

For motors with integrated brake, it is also possible to run in and verify their effectiveness by applying a torque through the drive.

Each test can be parameterized, with the possibility of being disabled, and collected data are stored on a database for tracking and future access.
